Custom Packing Tape: 3 Smart Design Moves used by Industrial designer Shoddy Shameron | Case Study
Ship with a subtle, designer signature. Shoddy (the industrial designer) builds products in public and wanted branded tape on every seam as an “if‑you‑know‑you‑know” signal—some shipments carry the Shoddy name, many don’t. The tape acts like a maker’s mark across projects. We printed custom packing tape (water‑activated, fiber‑reinforced) on brown kraft with green + spot white for crisp contrast.

Brand & Goal
ShoddyShameron is a designer’s alias—think signature rather than standalone brand. The goal: use Shoddy‑branded tape to quietly mark outgoing products (including collaborations and lines that don’t carry the Shoddy name), so every carton ships with a recognizable maker’s mark. Requirements: fast turnaround, small quantity, single‑pull sealing, and an aesthetic that photographs well for in‑public design updates.
Orientation, Rhythm & Signal — Designing Tape Like a Designer
Horizontal vs. Vertical (and when to use each)
- Horizontal locks (logo reads left→right): Ideal for photo clarity and unboxing shots. When the box sits on a table or shelf, the mark reads cleanly without rotating the carton. Great for short brand names and wide wordmarks.
- Vertical locks (logo runs along the tape): Strong distance legibility on stacked cartons and warehouse aisles (tall strokes repeat and catch the eye). Useful for taller letterforms and stackable icons (like Shoddy’s bird + SHODDY).
- When in doubt—use both: Many high‑volume shippers mix a vertical wordmark with horizontal elements (icons, claims, or safety marks) so tape reads no matter how the box is oriented. Large marketplaces (e.g., Amazon) commonly do this on water‑activated paper tape for visibility from multiple angles.

How Shoddy applied it Shoddy built a dual‑orientation system: a vertical SHODDY wordmark to carry down the run and a horizontal bird mark floating between repeats. On the box, you always catch at least one element right‑side‑up. It feels intentional—and it photographs well from multiple angles.
Cadence & repeat (why 15″ worked)
- A 15″ repeat lands one full vertical mark on most standard panels without crowding and reduces “dead zones” on larger cartons.
- Keep breathing room between repeats so the eye reads one signature at a time; too dense feels noisy, too sparse feels generic.
Treat tape like a billboard (CTAs that don’t shout)
- QR code, small and classy: Link to a welcome page, setup guide, drop tracker, or a “designed by” portfolio. Keep the code at ≥0.6″ square with a quiet zone.
- Soft CTA text: “Scan for setup,” “Designed by Shoddy,” or “Track your order.” One short line near the code is enough.
- UTMs always: Point to a campaign URL so you can attribute scans to tape. (We’ll generate the UTM for you.)
Material & ink choices that keep it readable
- Brown kraft + spot white + a brand color: True‑white letters on kraft with a color field for contrast—tactile and photo‑friendly.
- White kraft + knockout: For modern, bright brands, knock the logo to substrate white and skip white ink—ultra‑clean and repeatable.
Pro setup checklist (quick)
- Decide your primary orientation (H or V), then add a secondary element in the opposite orientation.
- Pick a repeat so at least one full signature lands on each face.
- If adding a QR, test scans on matte kraft under mixed light.
- Export CMYK, expand strokes, and keep a ≥1/16″ safe margin from the tape edge.
The Decision: Tested Both — Chose Brown Kraft + Spot White
We prototyped two options for custom packing tape:

- White kraft + black art (knockout for white) — ultra‑clean, studio‑friendly contrast.
- Brown kraft + spot white + green — warmer, craft‑forward look with brand‑right green.
After hands‑on testing, brown kraft with printed white won out. The forest‑green field sits naturally on kraft and matches the brand’s boutique, limited‑run vibe; the spot‑white delivers true‑white logos on brown paper; and the overall finish feels more “crafty” in the best sense—intentional and tactile. White kraft remains a great choice for brands prioritizing a bright, modern look; for Shoddy’s aesthetic, brown kraft was the right call.
Our Approach (What We Printed)
We produced 2″ × 450′, fiber‑reinforced custom packing tape on brown kraft with two inks: a green field and spot white for the logo/mark. A 15″ repeat spaces the vertical SHODDY wordmark and nests the bird icon for rhythm on standard shipping boxes. Water‑based, low‑VOC inks keep edges clean and photo‑friendly on kraft.
Why 2″ width here?
These shipments are lighter (putter heads, covers, markers), so 2″ spans the center seam well while keeping cost/roll and cost/box efficient. For heavier master cartons (~50 lb), we generally recommend 2.75″.
Artwork Prep & File Setup

The design team supplied vector marks. We:
- Set a 15″ repeat so at least one full vertical logotype lands on each panel.
- Prepared two artboards for flexibility (white‑kraft knockout, brown‑kraft with spot white), then selected brown for this run.
- Ensured strokes expanded, fonts embedded, and safe margins ≥ 1/16″ from tape edges.
- Disabled overprint on light elements so white ink sits cleanly on kraft.

Application Setup (Baseline)
- Dispenser: Manual sponge or electric WAT (Better Pack/Uline class)
- Water: Warm ~100–120°F (38–49°C) for faster gum activation
- Brush pressure (electric): Mid setting for single‑pull seals
- Placement: Center seam, single strip; maintain 2–3″ overhang at each end
Length‑of‑cut planning: Use our Tape Calculators to estimate per‑strip length, strips per box, and cost per box (plus suggested preset lengths by box size/taping style).
FAQs
How much is custom packing tape?
Use our Tape Calculators for instant pricing—per roll, per foot, and per box—with savings suggestions.
Horizontal or vertical logo—what’s better on tape?
Both have jobs: horizontal reads clean in photos and unboxings; vertical pops on stacked cartons and from a distance. Many large shippers (e.g., Amazon) mix the two so the brand reads in any orientation. Shoddy used a vertical wordmark plus a horizontal icon between repeats.
How do I get tape like Amazon uses?
Most “Amazon‑style” box tape is custom water‑activated paper tape (often fiber‑reinforced) with mixed vertical + horizontal brand elements for readability. Start with 2.75″ width for strong seam coverage, pick natural or white kraft, and upload your artwork.
Can I add a QR code or CTA on tape?
Yes. Keep the QR ≥0.6″ square with a quiet zone and pair it with a short, soft CTA (e.g., “Scan for setup”). We’ll generate a UTM link so you can track scans.
Do I need an expensive dispenser to start?
No. A sponge or manual WAT dispenser works. When you’re shipping ≈30+ boxes/day, an electric unit usually pays for itself with speed and preset lengths.
What width should I choose?
2″ is great for parcels ≈20 lb and under. For heavier cartons/case packs up to ≈50 lb, go 2.75″ for more seam coverage and bite.
Can you print white ink on brown kraft?
Yes. For true white on brown kraft, we print spot white. On white kraft, you can often knock out to substrate white and skip white ink.
Is the tape recyclable with the box?
It’s paper‑based and designed to be recycled with corrugate once applied—check local guidelines.

Outcomes
- On‑brand at a glance: White logotype and bird‑mark read from a distance on kraft.
- Strong seams, fewer re‑tapes: Fiber‑reinforced WAT bonds to corrugate when water is dialed.
- Fast lines, fewer changeovers: 450′ rolls and single‑pull taping.
- Cost clarity: Calculators show cost/roll, cost/foot, cost/box for your exact dimensions.
Results vary by box stock, humidity, and SOP; tune water and brush settings for your line.
